STORY: Fishing for their next meal, penniless vagrants Laurel and Hardy receive word that wealthy Ebeneezer Laurel has passed away. Figuring that Stan may be in line for a huge inheritance, The Boys show up at the Laurel mansion on a dark and stormy night. They discover that old Ebeneezer has been murdered, and are themselves (along with the other Laurel heirs) considered suspects. They spend a terror-filled night in the mansion before awakening back on the fishing docks, their experience having been but a dream.

Every attempt to switch pants winds up with The Boys caught...well, with their pants down. A cop chases them to a construction site, where they escape by riding an elevator to the top floor of a unfinished building. Atop the girders, 20 stories in the air, they finally switch trousers, contend with a crab that has found its way into Ollie's pants, and manage to nearly fall to their death only a few dozen times.

STORY: A string of robberies has Police Officer Kennedy on the outs with his chief. They have occured on his beat, and no arrests have been made. Kennedy's encounter with vagrants Stan and Ollie gives him an idea. He makes a deal with The Boys: in exchange for not arresting them for vagrancy, they will break into the Chief's house, whereupon Kennedy will burst in and stage an arrest. The Boys knock over garbage cans and make a racket breaking in, and Kennedy himself winds up arrested for the robberies.

Barbershop owners Stanley and Oliver both answer a personal ad from a rich widow seeking a husband. Oliver hides Stanley's reply and mails just his own. When Oliver receives a proposal of marriage from the widow, he sets off to start a life of wealth and ease. But just then Stanley discovers his unsent letter and demands to be brought along. At the widow's home, they're informed by the creepy butler that his mistress is crazy; having been jilted once by another Oliver, her hobby now is marrying all the Olivers she can find and then slitting their throats. So far, there've been seven Olivers.

As they dine, they overhear a conversation in the next room: a heartless landlord threatens to throw the old lady into the street. Unaware that what they have just heard is dialogue from a play rehearsal, The Boys set out to raise money to help the old lady. They attempt to auction off their car, but Stan inadvertently winds up the high bidder. A drunk accidently sticks his wallet into Stan's pocket; Ollie finds it and thinks Stan has been stealing from the old lady. When the truth is discovered, a vengeful Stan takes out his wrath on Ollie.

The truth is eventually discovered, and the Laurels and Hardys enjoy a happy reunion.

STORY: It is 1917, and America has just entered World War I. Stan and Ollie are drafted and create havoc in training camp. They befriend another doughboy, Eddie Smith, who is killed in action. Eddie leaves behind a young daughter, now an orphan. Upon their discharge, Stan and Ollie devote their time to finding the girl's grandparents, with the family name of Smith as their only lead to their whereabouts.

Laurel and Hardy's first feature-length film was not intended as such. Originally planned as a short subject, it grew and expanded as production was underway. For this film, Hal Roach had obtained the use of the gigantic prison sets MGM had used for its production of the film The Big House. The cost of rental insured that the picture would not make a profit unless it was expanded to feature length, so new episodes and scenes were constructed en route, and many added after the film had been previewed.

STORY: Stan and Ollie are employees at a horn factory, where the constant honking eventually drives Ollie to a nervous breakdown (or a case of "hornophobia," according to his doctor). An ocean voyage is the prescription for Ollie's condition, but he seems to be just as afraid of the sea as he is of horns. They decide to rent a boat and keep it tied to the dock. At night, escaped convict Nick Grainger sneaks aboard the boat, while The Boys' pet goat dines on the mooring ropes, setting them adrift. In the morning, Grainger forces L&H to prepare a meal. Having no food aboard, they concoct a synthetic meal (string for spagetti, sponges for meatballs, lamp wicks for bacon, etc.). When Grainger threatens their lives, Stan starts blowing his trombone which causes Ollie to go berserk and subdue Grainger.

Ordered out of town by angry Judge Beaumont, vagrants Stanley and Oliver meet a congenial drunk who invites them to stay at his luxurious mansion. The drunk can't find his key, but the boys find a way in, sending the surprised woman inside into a faint. They revive her with what they think is water, but is actually gin, and all get tipsy in the process. Outside, the drunk realizes he's at the wrong house and stumbles off. Eventually, the real homeowner arrives, none other than Judge Beaumont.

Sons of the Desert (1933)

STORY: Stan and Ollie have taken a sacred vow to attend the international convention of their lodge, the Sons of the Desert, in Chicago. Their wives have other ideas and demand The Boys take them on a vacation to the mountains. Ollie fakes an illness for which the only cure is an ocean voyage to Honolulu. He and Stan announce they are setting sail for Hawaii, but sneak off to the Chicago convention, where they have a wonderful time. The wives are distraught when they receive word that the Hawaiian liner on which L&H are supposedly traveling has sunk. The jig is up, however, when the wives see newsreel footage of the Sons of the Desert convention, featuring their husbands merrily cavorting for the cameras. After hiding out in the attic and on the roof, Stan and Ollie confront their wives. Ollie attempts to maintain the ruse, but Stan eventually breaks down and tells the whole ugly truth. Stan's reward for his honesty is an evening of romantic bliss with his wife; Ollie, on the other hand, is the recipient of various flying projectiles aimed squarely at his head.

He hides out in a hotel with his lawyer (Laurel) and butler (Hardy), and escapes when Stan climbs on his shoulders, dons an extra-long coat, and pretends to be Ollie's 11-foot-tall wife.

A cheesemaker buys their entire line with some phony money; unaware, The Boys celebrate with a lavish dinner at a fancy hotel. Unable to pay the bill, they are forced to work in the hotel's kitchen. Ollie falls in love with Anna, the hotel's chambermaid, who is actually a famous opera singer hiding out from her husband. The husband, Victor, is also hiding out at the same hotel, attempting to write a grand opera. Ollie's attempts to woo Anna are thwarted when he realizes the truth, but he succeeds in reconciling the bickering couple.

Bad timing, however, as Mrs. Hardy has just stormed out on her husband, due to his loyalty to permanent houseguest Stan. Ollie attempts to pass off Stan, dressed in drag, as his wife. The ersatz Hardys and the uncle attend a local nightclub, where the ruse is revealed when a waiter attempts to hide a stolen necklace down the back of Stan's dress.
